The “Research, Innovation, and Digitalization for Smart Transformation 2021-2027” Program (PNIIDIT) is funded by the European Regional Development Fund and is aimed at achieving the goals of the European Green Deal and EU Policy Goal 1 “A Smarter Europe through Promoting Innovative and Smart Economic Transition.”

Eligible applicants and target groups of the program are:

Centers of Excellence and Competence Centers, research organizations, and higher education institutions;

Enterprises, incl. SMEs, spin-off companies, and start-ups;

Innovation clusters, European digital and innovation hubs, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Patent Office, Sofia Tech Park;

Consortia, institutions, and agencies working in the field of R&D, industrial and intellectual property protection.

The main objectives of PNIIDIT include:

1. Supporting the sustainable development of Centers of Excellence (CoE) and Competence Centers (CC);

2. Providing support for the implementation of Bulgaria’s strategic commitments related to the Green Deal, the blue economy, the low-carbon economy, and the circular economy;

3. Supporting research projects of regional significance for less developed regions;

4. Promoting international scientific cooperation and achieving synergy with Pillar 1 of Horizon Europe “Excellent Science”;

5. Developing a model for knowledge and technology transfer, including the creation of effective partnerships between academia, SMEs, and industry; encouraging industrial innovation programs where business initiatives align around shared challenges with academia, SMEs, the NGO sector, and public institutions; and enhancing skills, particularly in the areas of green and digital technologies.

6. Improving the security and quality of public services by ensuring high levels of cybersecurity and cyber protection and by implementing data-driven innovations, among others.

 

The planned implementation measures are organized into two main priorities:

  • PRIORITY 1: “Sustainable Development of the Bulgarian Research and Innovation Ecosystem”;
    PRIORITY 2: “Digital Transformation of the Public Sector”.
